At Mother of Pearl Atelier we make one-off bespoke handknitted and hand crafted cushions, quilts, rugs and more
Mother of Pearl is a home textiles atelier specialising in rag rugs, patchwork quilts made from reclaimed fabrics and hand knitted Fair Isle style cushions and accessories.
I started the business because I am an obsessive fabric and yarn buyer. Since my teens I have found myself scouring my local charity shops, carboot sales and church fetes for intriguing colours, patterns and textures.
These vintage and forgotten items evoke memories, feelings and eras- whether it be a pair of sixties children's curtains, a box of eggshell blue 4 ply still in its packaging, a hand embroidered table runner or a torn dress with a beautiful stylised print. These materials have a Proustian capacity to transport us back to our childhood, or can rekindle our memories of people and places we have visited, through their colour, feel or motif.
I hope to arouse these senses by making the materials into rugs, quilts or cushions, which have a practical use. I really like the thought that these materials get back into homes, to be enjoyed, owned and collected by somebody else.
I live in coastal Dorset where with my family. When am not found reading, enjoying the local scenery, or teaching pre-school and modern languages, I love to travel within Europe and North Africa, where I find inspiration in museums, galleries and local folk art.
